IGREJA DO CALVÁRIO E SÃO PAULO DA CRUZ – SÃO PAULO – SP

Essa igreja foi construída pelos religiosos Passionistas, instituição fundada por São Paulo da Cruz no século XVIII, e que tem como carisma “implantar e firmar, nos corações, o amor de Deus por meio de meditação da Sagrada Paixão e Morte de Jesus Cristo. Todos os seus religiosos, aos três votos comuns, acrescentam o quarto, pelo qual se obrigam a trabalhar pela propagação entre os fiéis da devoção à Sagrada Paixão. ”

Os primeiros membros dessa ordem chegaram ao Brasil em 1911, e o projeto inicial dessa igreja foi apresentando em 1923, sendo então iniciada uma campanha de arrecadação de donativos. No dia 3 de janeiro de 1926, data do aniversário de nascimento de São Paulo da Cruz, fundador dos passionistas, foi oficialmente inaugurada a igreja, embora não estivesse ainda terminada. A partir daí, as obras de acabamento interno continuaram vagarosamente até sua inauguração definitiva em 19 de maio de 1930.

O interior da igreja foi inspirado nas basílicas de Roma, e o altar mor foi projetado pelo famoso artista Benedito Calixto – que também embelezou o interior da igreja com suas pinturas.

Os sinos da igreja vieram de Curitiba, e foram abençoados em 1939. O sino mais pesado – em dó maior – com 1.731 quilos foi dedicado a Jesus Crucificado, o segundo – fá maior – pesando 759 quilos, recebeu o nome de Mater Dolorosa (em homenagem à Nossa Senhora das Dores), o terceiro, pesando 478 quilos, foi dedicado a São Paulo da Cruz, e o quarto sino – lá maior – com 350 quilos foi dedicado a São José e o quinto, com 188 quilos, em homenagem a Santa Gema Galgani.

Em 1948, dois organeiros alemães construíram, nas próprias dependências do convento, um órgão com 2.321 tubos. Mais tarde, foi acrescentado ao instrumento um novo jogo de flautas metálicas vindas da Itália.

A igreja está situada em frente à praça Benedito Calixto, no bairro de Pinheiros.
