Os túneis “esquecidos” da cidade de São Paulo, The tunnels “forgotten” the city of São Paulo

São espaços escondidos, localizados até 15 metros sob a superfície, que serviram de passagem secreta a artistas famosos, ou rota de fuga em tempos de guerra. Hoje despertam a curiosidade. Os túneis que cruzam o subsolo de São Paulo – um deles pode até ser visitado – guardam histórias que ajudam a contar a trajetória de algumas instituições da cidade.

A Expedição Metrópole circulou por três desses caminhos subterrâneos ‘quase secretos’. E ouviu de casos pitorescos a histórias assustadoras.

Nos dois túneis do Teatro Municipal, por exemplo, hoje circulam apenas funcionários. Mas já houve dias em que serviram para ajudar divas e galãs a escapar de tietes. Com 32 metros de extensão, ligam a casa de espetáculos à Praça Ramos de Azevedo por baixo da Rua Coronel Xavier de Toledo. Foram criados para ventilar a sala de concertos com ar natural. Atualmente fechadas com grades, abrigam dutos de ar-condicionado.

Mas existe uma terceira passagem, o verdadeiro mistério do teatro: é o túnel que o ligava ao antigo Hotel Esplanada, atualmente sede da Votorantim. Nem mesmo os arquitetos que trabalharam no recente restauro do prédio sabem onde começa. A única entrada que resta fica no subsolo da Votorantim.

Por esse túnel, passaram despercebidos do público o tenor Beniamino Gigli, a soprano Bidú Sayão, a pianista Magdalena Tagliaferro, para citar alguns artistas que costumavam ficar semanas hospedados no antigo hotel. ‘Não estava previsto no projeto original do teatro. Sabemos que existiu porque há passagem do outro lado, mas não achamos resquícios da ligação com o teatro’, conta a arquiteta Rafaela Bernardes, responsável pelo restauro. ‘Provavelmente foi aterrado na reforma dos anos 1950.’

O que nunca deixou de habitar os túneis do Municipal foram as histórias de fantasmas, repassadas há décadas de funcionário a funcionário. Na ‘fase’ atual, a alma penada é de criança. ‘É uma menina que cruza os túneis e circula pelos subterrâneos. As faxineiras até se acostumaram com ela. E tem muito machão que já se assustou aqui embaixo’, conta o responsável pela manutenção do teatro, Joaquim Nunes, de 64 anos, no Municipal há 23. ‘Não acredito e nunca vi, mas prefiro não arriscar. Se alguém puder circular pelos túneis e o Salão dos Arcos (também no subterrâneo) comigo, tanto melhor.’

Fuga. No subsolo do quartel das Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (Rota), na Luz, a rede de túneis já teve três quilômetros. Ligava o prédio – a exemplo do Municipal, também projetado por Ramos de Azevedo – aos outros quartéis e à antiga penitenciária da Avenida Tiradentes. A maior parte foi aterrada para obras do Metrô. Mas ainda restam 100 metros, transformados em memorial, com fotos e objetos antigos do batalhão. Restam também dois morcegos, que mesmo após a reforma continuam no local. ‘Antigamente, eram revoadas de morcegos, que atrapalhavam os soldados em treinamento nos túneis. Agora sobraram só esses dois, que servem pra assustar visitantes’, conta o sargento Cristiano Bauer, de 35 anos, responsável por visitas semanais ao local (informações no 11 3315-0188).

Os túneis – usados para locomoção de soldados na Revolução de 1924 – serviram também como cadeia de presos políticos na ditadura militar. No ano passado, as duas celas foram abertas à visitação e abrigam arquivo morto da Rota. Mesmo com melhorias, o ambiente é pesado, úmido, com teias de aranha e grades de metal enferrujadas. A rede de túneis foi construída com tijolos franceses e levou 20 anos para ficar pronta. O chão é de terra batida e a luz, bastante fraca. ‘É um clima que não poderia ser modificado, para ser fiel às funções originais’, diz o sargento Bauer. ‘Por mais obscuras que sejam.’

Indesejado. Os 90 metros mais indesejados da capital. É um título que caberia ao túnel que liga o Instituto Central do Hospital das Clínicas ao Instituto Médico Legal (IML), em Pinheiros, na zona oeste. Por lá, ninguém quer passar. ‘É usado para transportar até o Serviço de Verificação de Óbito ou ao IML pessoas que morrem no hospital’, explica a diretora de administração do hospital, Rita de Cássia Peres. O aspecto sóbrio – pintado de branco, pontilhado de manchas de umidade – e silencioso aumenta a atmosfera pesada. Por ali, há apenas barulho de passos e arrastar de macas. A não ser debaixo dos dois respiros que ligam o túnel à superfície, onde se ouvem vozes de pedestres. ‘É o maior susto para desavisados. Na hora, pensam que são ‘vozes do além”, conta a diretora, que trabalha no hospital desde 1980.

Mortes de famosos, às vezes, interrompem a quieta rotina do ‘túnel do IML’. ‘Quando Elis Regina morreu, tivemos de pôr seguranças nas portas do túnel. Muita gente queria acompanhar’, lembra Rita de Cássia. ‘Mas aqui não é lugar para cortejo.’
