Uma cidade antiga sob Roma: visitando as catacumbas de Priscila
Qualquer visitante de Roma vai querer ver e explorar os locais históricos e culturais populares: o Coliseu , o Fórum, a Fonte de Trevi e, claro, o Vaticano. Mas grande parte da história antiga da cidade reside, na verdade, no subsolo, nos túneis ou catacumbas ladeadas por tumbas que serpenteiam sob as ruas de Roma.
A cidade possui mais de 40 catacumbas que se estendem por centenas de quilômetros e nos contam sobre os costumes e tradições funerárias dos antigos romanos e dos primeiros cristãos. Muitos estão abertos ao público, incluindo as Catacumbas de Priscila.
Os arqueólogos usaram a palavra catacumba para descrever os extensos cemitérios subterrâneos e cubículos ou pequenas salas encontradas ao longo de suas galerias e passagens. Acredita-se também que Catacumba se refira a um lugar próximo à Via Ápia chamado Catacumbus, que significa "perto das lacunas".
As catacumbas foram esculpidas em tufo, uma pedra vulcânica macia e porosa que é surpreendentemente forte. Do início do século II ao século V dC, fossores ou trabalhadores qualificados construíram essas maravilhas subterrâneas que se tornaram o local de descanso final para muitos mártires cristãos, bem como para cidadãos judeus e pagãos.
As necrópoles subterrâneas de Roma caíram no esquecimento durante a Idade Média devido à prática de bloquear entradas para evitar roubos por caçadores de relíquias. Eles foram redescobertos no século 16 dC, quando o arqueólogo maltês Antonio Bosio (1576 – 1629 dC) percebeu a importância de uma entrada que encontrou ao longo da Via Salaria em 1578.
Em 1593, Bósio desceu ao labirinto das Catacumbas de Domitila, tornando-se a primeira pessoa a explorar sistematicamente as catacumbas de Roma. Ele foi chamado de "Colombo das catacumbas", e seu livro Roma Sotterranea , publicado postumamente em 1632, estabeleceu a disciplina da arqueologia cristã. Infelizmente, algumas das catacumbas que ele explorou foram destruídas desde então.
Por que as catacumbas foram construídas?
No século II d.C., Roma enfrentou o duplo problema da superpopulação e da escassez de terras. A cidade estava crescendo e muitos edifícios tinham quatro ou cinco andares. Os enterros não eram permitidos dentro dos muros da cidade e os primeiros cristãos não concordavam com o costume pagão de cremar os corpos dos falecidos, por isso os cemitérios subterrâneos comunitários ofereciam uma solução prática.
Como o tufo era macio, era relativamente fácil construir catacumbas com vários níveis. Cemitérios subterrâneos podiam ser construídos com altura de até cinco metros e com milhares de nichos ou lóculos horizontais para acomodar os corpos. Os lóculos foram empilhados uns sobre os outros nas paredes de tufo.
Para cidadãos romanos ricos, cubículos poderiam ser escavados para enterrar uma família unida. Dentro dos cubículos, os túmulos embutidos na parede podiam ser decorados com afrescos.Uma das primeiras catacumbas redescobertas no século XVI, e também uma das mais antigas, são precisamente as Catacumbas de Priscila. Estas catacumbas são conhecidas como regina catacumbarum , ou a rainha das catacumbas, devido ao grande número de mártires e papas ali enterrados.
As catacumbas de Priscila
As Catacumbas de Priscila são o cemitério cristão primitivo mais bem preservado de Roma e foram originalmente escavadas entre os séculos II e V dC. Elas estão localizadas abaixo do extenso parque Villa Ada, na Via Salaria, uma antiga estrada que leva de Roma ao norte.
A entrada moderna para estas catacumbas é feita através de uma escada em espiral de mármore no convento das Irmãs Beneditinas de Priscila. Priscila era uma rica nobre cristã (século I dC), benfeitora da comunidade cristã e doou o terreno, originalmente uma pedreira de tufo, sob o qual foram escavadas as catacumbas.Priscila era esposa do cônsul romano Manius Acilius Glabrion (91 DC) e mãe do senador romano São Pudens. Diz-se que todos os três foram mártires cristãos: Glabrion foi forçado a lutar contra um leão por ordem do imperador Domiciano (reinou de 81-96 DC) e mais tarde foi executado; São Pudente foi martirizado sob Nero (reinou de 54 a 68 d.C.), e Priscila também foi martirizada por sua fé cristã e sepultada no terreno hoje ocupado pelo convento.
Em 313, o imperador Constantino emitiu o Édito de Milão, que estabelecia permanentemente a tolerância religiosa ao cristianismo . Desde o século IV dC, havia um grande desejo de ser sepultado com os mártires nas catacumbas. O Papa Marcelino (pontífice 296-304) jaz nas catacumbas de Priscila, outra vítima da perseguição de Diocleciano , junto com Pudenciana, filha de São Pudens. Embora tenha sido sugerido que Pudenciana se refere à casa de Pudente, e não a um mártir cristão específico.
Iconografia cristã primitiva
As Catacumbas de Priscila são uma rede de túneis mal iluminados que se estendem por oito quilômetros abaixo do parque Villa Ada. Cerca de 40 mil tumbas estão empilhadas e, em alguns lugares, essas catacumbas chegam a três andares.Depois de descer a escadaria de mármore, a primeira coisa que você nota é o ar fresco e bolorento ao entrar em uma passagem estreita que leva às catacumbas. Os tetos são baixos e o chão de terra é áspero em alguns lugares. As lâmpadas estão penduradas no teto e costumam ligar e desligar. Na verdade, a corrente elétrica pode ser interrompida, deixando tudo na escuridão total – uma sensação bastante assustadora! Se você não gosta de espaços pequenos, talvez seja melhor aproveitar um dia no lindo parque Villa Ada.
Não há corpos ou ossos no primeiro nível destas catacumbas. Em meados do século XVII, tanto o Papa Inocêncio Eles não foram tão completos quanto talvez se esperasse, porque um grande camafeu de ônix branco e marrom foi encontrado no terceiro andar em 2018. O camafeu data do século IV dC e mostra o perfil de uma mulher em um vestido bordado e drapeado.
No primeiro nível, os lóculos vazios ficam à esquerda e à direita dos corredores, sendo os menores nichos destinados às crianças. Às vezes, os corredores são tão estreitos que seus ombros tocam as paredes de tufo em ambos os lados.
Os lóculos eram o tipo mais comum de tumba e destinavam-se principalmente aos pobres. Os corpos foram colocados dentro deles, envoltos em uma mortalha e polvilhados com cal para retardar o processo normal de decomposição e controlar os odores. O túmulo foi então murado com mármore, telhas de terracota ou gesso.
Também neste nível estão os cubículos e os arcossólios , bem como os túmulos dos mártires. A arte cristã mais antiga pode ser encontrada aqui, pois há muitas inscrições em pedra marcadas com a palavra grega para peixe, Ichthys , um símbolo usado pelos primeiros cristãos. Ichthys é uma sigla, palavra formada a partir das primeiras letras de diversas palavras, e significa “ Jesus Cristo Salvador, o Filho de Deus ”. Você também encontrará muitas inscrições comoventes deixadas por cidadãos comuns de Roma em memória de um ente querido falecido. Uma dessas inscrições diz: “Você era um filho doce”.
Ao longo dos corredores e túneis também existem nichos que abrigariam lamparinas a óleo para iluminar o caminho dos trabalhadores e das famílias visitantes.
Cenas bíblicas podem ser vistas em algumas paredes e tetos, especialmente em uma câmara quadrada chamada Capella Greca ou Capela Grega, conhecida por suas pinturas em estilo pompeiano, imitações de mármore e estuque. A Capela Grega possui três nichos para sarcófagos e um longo assento para banquetes funerários, que eram realizados nos túmulos em homenagem aos mortos. Esses festivais eram chamados de refrescos ou ágape.
Nesta capela existe um polêmico afresco que data da primeira metade do século II dC Fractio Panis (ou "Partir o Pão ") é o nome desta rica ilustração que mostra sete figuras sentadas a uma longa mesa carregada de pão e peixe. O afresco está localizado na face do arco acima do túmulo do altar e lembra A Última Ceia. Há muito se supõe que as figuras retratadas sejam masculinas, mas isso foi recentemente questionado por Nicola Denzey Lewis, professora de estudos religiosos na Universidade Brown, em Rhode Island.
Denzey Lewis sugere que as figuras usem roupas femininas e que a figura do meio conduza uma cerimônia religiosa ou banquete fúnebre. Isto implicaria que as mulheres desempenharam um papel mais importante na Igreja primitiva do que se supunha anteriormente.
Acredita-se também que as Catacumbas de Priscila tenham um afresco da Virgem Maria do século III dC, que é considerada a mais antiga pintura mariana conhecida ainda existente. Datado entre os anos 230 e 240, o afresco retrata Maria, que parece amamentar o menino Jesus no colo. É a única imagem mariana anterior ao Concílio de Éfeso de 431, que reconheceu oficialmente Maria como mãe de Deus.
Uma das cenas mais informativas é a de O Bom Pastor (por volta do ano 225). Conhecemos a imagem de Cristo como um humilde pastor ou protetor que zela pelo seu rebanho, pois é parte consolidada da arte cristã. Mas também existem imagens pré-cristãs que mostram um homem com uma cabra ou um carneiro pendurado nos ombros. Os primeiros cristãos adaptaram essas imagens e, numa cúpula rasa do teto das Catacumbas de Priscila, você verá essa adaptação inicial em uma grande pintura que mostra Cristo rodeado por três cabras. Ele carrega uma das cabras nos ombros e foi sugerido que o pintor estava familiarizado com a escultura romana porque a postura de Cristo é conhecida como contrapposto . Este termo refere-se a uma postura em que uma perna suporta todo o peso do corpo e a outra perna está relaxada, enquanto os quadris e ombros repousam em ângulos opostos, dando uma ligeira curva em S ao tronco. Uma pintura ou representação de um homem carregando uma cabra ou um carneiro é conhecida como crióforo ou crióforo.
A pintura do Bom Pastor também mostra imagens do paraíso com duas pombas segurando ramos de oliveira (representando a paz e o Espírito Santo) e o pavão, que era um símbolo cristão primitivo de ressurreição, renovação e imortalidade. A lenda antiga dizia que a carne do pavão não se decompunha e, portanto, representava a vida eterna.
Esta arte cristã primitiva concentrava-se nos ensinamentos de Cristo e adaptou da arte pagã a noção de um pastor cuidando do seu rebanho. Somente a partir do século IV é que começamos a ver obras de arte que retratam a crucificação e ressurreição de Cristo.
A parada final de qualquer visita às Catacumbas de Priscila é o Cubículo da Mulher Véu. Nesta sala, há um afresco (250 DC) na parede posterior que mostra uma mulher usando um rico vestido e véu roxos, com as mãos levantadas na posição usada pelos sacerdotes para o culto público. A vestimenta é semelhante a uma túnica litúrgica e mais uma vez levanta a questão do papel das mulheres sacerdotes na igreja primitiva.
Como chegar às catacumbas de Priscila
Existem várias maneiras de chegar a essas belas e pacíficas catacumbas. Você pode viajar de metrô na linha B da Stazione Termini (estação Termini) e parar em Annibaliano. São apenas alguns minutos a pé da estação até as Catacumbas de Priscila.
Se quiser passar um dia, você pode viajar para Bolonha, que é a terceira parada da linha B do metrô da Termini. Não confunda com a cidade de Bolonha, no norte da Itália . Dê uma olhada ao redor da cidade e sua praça antes de caminhar aproximadamente 4 quilômetros (2,5 milhas) pela Circonvallazione Nomentana até as catacumbas.
Para viajar de ônibus, você pegaria as linhas 86, 92 e 310 da Termini; ou 63 da Piazza Venezia / Largo Argentina / Barberini.
