Localizada na região sul da Suméria (atual Warka, Iraque), Uruk era conhecida na língua aramaica como Erech, o que se acredita ter dado origem ao nome moderno do país Iraque (embora outra possível derivação seja Al- Iraque), nome árabe da região da Babilônia ). A cidade de Uruk é mais famosa pelo seu grande rei Gilgamesh e pela história épica da sua busca pela imortalidade, mas também por uma série de 'primeiras' no desenvolvimento da civilização que ali ocorreram.
É considerada a primeira cidade verdadeira do mundo, a origem da escrita, o primeiro exemplo de obra arquitetônica em pedra e a construção de grandes estruturas de pedra, a origem do zigurate e a primeira cidade a desenvolver o selo cilíndrico que os antigos mesopotâmios usou-os para designar bens pessoais ou como assinatura em documentos. Considerando a importância do selo cilíndrico para as pessoas da época, e que representava a identidade e reputação pessoal, Uruk também poderia ser considerada a cidade que primeiro reconheceu a importância do indivíduo na comunidade coletiva. A cidade foi continuamente habitada desde a sua fundação até cerca de 300 d.C. (aproximadamente), quando, devido a influências naturais e provocadas pelo homem, as pessoas começaram a abandonar a área. Foi abandonado e enterrado até ser escavado em 1853 dC por William Loftus para o Museu Britânico.
O período Uruk
O Período Ubaid (c. 5.000-4.100 aC), quando o povo chamado Ubaid habitou pela primeira vez a região da Suméria, é seguido pelo Período Uruk (4.100-2.900 aC), durante o qual as cidades começaram a se desenvolver em toda a Mesopotâmia e Uruk. . O Período Uruk é dividido em 8 fases, desde a mais antiga, passando pelo seu destaque, e até o seu declínio com base nos níveis das ruínas escavadas e na história revelada pelos artefatos ali encontrados. A cidade foi mais influente entre 4.100 e cerca de 3.000 aC, quando Uruk era o maior centro urbano e o centro do comércio e da administração.
Não se sabe exatamente como Uruk governou a região, por que e como se tornou a primeira cidade do mundo e como exerceu a sua autoridade. A historiadora Gwendolyn Leick escreve:
O fenómeno Uruk ainda é altamente debatido, até que ponto Uruk exercia controlo político sobre a grande área coberta pelos artefactos de Uruk, se dependia do uso da força e quais as instituições responsáveis. Muito pouco foi escavado no local para fornecer respostas firmes a essas perguntas. Porém, é claro que, nesta época, o processo de urbanização foi iniciado, concentrado na própria Uruk” (183-184).
Dado que a cidade de Ur tinha uma localização mais vantajosa para o comércio, mais a sul em direção ao Golfo Pérsico, parece fazer sentido que a cidade, e não Uruk, tivesse exercido mais influência, mas não é o caso.
Artefatos de Uruk aparecem em praticamente todos os sítios escavados na Mesopotâmia. O historiador Julian Reade observa:Talvez o exemplo mais marcante da ampla difusão de algumas características da cultura Uruk consista na distribuição daquilo que deve ser uma das formas mais reveladoras já feitas, a chamada tigela chanfrada. Este tipo de tigela, feita em molde e massa, é encontrada em grandes quantidades em toda a Mesopotâmia e além (30).
Este contentor era o meio pelo qual os trabalhadores pareciam ter recebido os seus salários: uma certa quantidade de cereais servida numa tigela de tamanho padrão. Restos dessas tigelas, por toda a Mesopotâmia, sugerem que "muitas vezes eram descartadas imediatamente após o uso, como a folha de alumínio contida em uma comida moderna" (Reade, 30). A tigela de borda chanfrada era tão popular que centros de manufatura surgiram por toda a Mesopotâmia, estendendo-se desde Uruk até a cidade de Mari, no extremo norte. Por causa disso, não está claro se a tigela se originou em Uruk ou em outro lugar (embora Uruk seja geralmente considerada a origem da tigela). Se fosse em Uruk, a tigela com borda chanfrada deveria ser contada entre as muitas conquistas da cidade, pois é o primeiro exemplo conhecido de produto produzido em massa.
Os bairros e deuses da cidade
A cidade foi dividida em duas seções, o Distrito de Eanna e o antigo distrito de Anu, nomeados em homenagem e dedicados à deusa Inanna e ao seu deus-avô Anu , respectivamente. A famosa Máscara de Warka (também conhecida como "A Senhora de Uruk"), um rosto esculpido em mármore encontrado em Uruk, é considerada uma imagem de Inanna e provavelmente fazia parte de uma obra maior de um dos templos de seu distrito.
O distrito de Eanna foi separado ou murado do resto da cidade, mas não está claro se isto foi para fins cerimoniais ou se, na construção do novo distrito de Eanna, os construtores precisaram de um muro por algum motivo. O historiador Samuel Noah Kramer sugere que Anu, o deus masculino, presidiu a cidade primitiva até o aumento da popularidade de sua filha Inanna e, nessa época, ele recebeu uma residência privada, completa com muro, no distrito de Eanna.Como os templos eram considerados a residência literal das divindades na terra, e como Inanna é regularmente retratada como uma deusa que preferia as coisas à sua maneira, talvez o bairro murado fosse simplesmente para lhe proporcionar alguma privacidade. Kramer também observa que, embora Inanna tenha permanecido uma divindade popular em toda a Mesopotâmia (eventualmente fundindo-se com Ishtar ), as deusas diminuíram em poder e prestígio ao mesmo tempo, e na mesma proporção, à medida que os direitos das mulheres se deterioravam. Sendo este o caso porque o distrito de Eanna foi murado para restringir o acesso a uma classe sacerdotal masculina. No entanto, como no caso da história de Uruk, esta teoria permanece em grande parte especulativa.
Inanna desempenhou um papel fundamental na história mitológica de Uruk, pois foi ela quem roubou o meh sagrado de seu deus-pai Enki na cidade sagrada de Eridu e os levou para Uruk. Os meh eram, nas palavras de Kramer (que primeiro traduziu a escrita cuneiforme ) “decretos divinos que são a base do padrão cultural da civilização suméria”. Como Eridu foi considerada pelos sumérios como a primeira cidade criada pelos deuses e um lugar sagrado para eles, a transferência do meh para Uruk significou uma transferência de poder e prestígio de uma cidade para outra.
Na história de Inanna e O Deus da Sabedoria , Deus Enki se esforça, ao descobrir que os meh foram roubados, para trazê-los de volta para Eridu, mas em vão. Inanna enganou seu pai e agora Uruk, e não Eridu, seria a sede do poder. Eridu estava associado à vida rural e ao mar primordial de onde surgiu a vida; Uruk era a personificação do novo modo de vida: a cidade. A história teria fornecido a um antigo mesopotâmico a razão pela qual Eridu perdeu importância e Uruk subiu às alturas: foi obra dos deuses.
A importância de Uruk e a longa declinação
Durante o Período Dinástico Inicial (2.900-2.334 a.C.), que se seguiu ao Período Uruk, Uruk ainda era a sede do poder na região, embora em um status bastante diminuído, e as principais dinastias da época governavam a partir da cidade. A grande muralha de Uruk, que se diz ter sido construída pelo próprio rei Gilgamesh, ainda existia ao redor da cidade quando o rei Eannutum forjou sua primeira dinastia de Lagash em 2.500 aC e estabeleceu o primeiro império na região.
O último rei desse império, Lugal-Zage (também conhecido como Lugalzagesi), admirou tanto a cidade que escolheu Uruk como sua capital e sede de poder. Quando a Suméria caiu sob o domínio do Império Acadiano em 2334 aC, Sargão de Akkad continuou a prestar reverência especial a Uruk e os distritos sagrados de Inanna e Anu continuaram em uso e foram, de fato, renovados e melhorados.
Embora a cidade tenha perdido a posição de preeminência que desfrutou durante o Período Uruk, continuou a desempenhar uma posição importante durante o Período Ur III (2047-1750 aC). A Terceira Dinastia de Ur governou de tal forma que deu origem a uma Renascença Suméria e Uruk beneficiou disso tanto quanto o resto da região. Com a queda da cidade de Ur em 1750 aC e a invasão da Suméria pelos elamitas, juntamente com os ataques dos amorreus, Uruk entrou em declínio junto com o resto da Suméria.No entanto, a cidade continuou a desempenhar um papel importante durante os períodos selêucida e parta da história tardia da Suméria. Este é um ponto substancial a ser observado, já que muitas outras cidades sumérias, ao mesmo tempo, tiveram menos sorte. Os distritos sagrados continuaram a ser mantidos, embora em menor grau, até o século VII d.C.; já passou muito do tempo em que muitas outras cidades mesopotâmicas foram abandonadas. O historiador Bertman escreve: "Uruk teve uma vida útil de 5.000 anos. Suas camadas mais antigas são virtualmente inexploradas, submersas profundamente na lama da planície aluvial de onde surgiu sua vida" (37). Talvez enterrada em ruínas antigas esteja a resposta para a razão pela qual a primeira cidade do mundo surgiu daquela maneira, onde surgiu e permaneceu tão importante para o povo da Mesopotâmia por tanto tempo. Ao contrário de outras cidades da região, não foi abandonada até a conquista muçulmana da Mesopotâmia em 630 dC.
A resposta ao mistério da proeminência de Uruk, contudo, pode ser mais simples do que parece. O historiador Paul Kriwaczek observou que qualquer mudança importante numa sociedade surge do "eterno conflito entre progressistas e conservadores, entre olhar para frente e para trás, entre aqueles que propõem 'vamos fazer algo novo' e aqueles que pensam que 'os métodos antigos são melhores'. 'Nenhuma grande mudança cultural ocorreu sem tal competição" (21).
Talvez a história de Inanna e Enki e a mudança de poder de Eridu para Uruk contem essa mesma disputa e mostrem como os antigos modos de vida rural, exemplificados no antigo local de Eridu, deram lugar à ascensão da cidade e a um novo tipo de comunidade. Tinha que acontecer em algum lugar, uma vez iniciado o processo de urbanização, e o local onde aconteceu foi em Uruk.
