Os vândalos eram uma tribo germânica mencionada pela primeira vez na história romana de Plínio, o Velho (77 dC), História Natural . Seu nome significa "os saqueadores" e tanto Plínio quanto Tácito o escrevem como "Vandilii". Hoje, o nome "vândalo" tornou-se sinônimo de destruição indiscriminada devido a histórias contadas por historiadores romanos, que descreveram seu comportamento violento em geral e seu saque de Roma especificamente em 455 DC.

O historiador Torsten Cumberland Jacobsen, entre outros, observou que esta identificação de vândalos com destruição sem sentido é equivocada. Jacobsen escreve:

Entre as muitas outras tribos germânicas, os vândalos faziam parte de um movimento que os historiadores chamam de "Peregrinação das Nações", que se desenvolveu aproximadamente entre 376-476 dC (embora geralmente se acredite que tenha começado mais cedo e terminado mais tarde). viu migrações em grande escala (muitas vezes devido a ataques hunos), empurrando as tribos germânicas para um contato mais próximo com o Império Romano e outras culturas.

Seja como for, o que parece claro na obra de Tácito é que havia diversas tribos germânicas distintas que os escritores romanos chamavam de “vândalos”. Naquela época, Gunderico (379-428 DC) era rei dos vândalos e dos alanos e foi capaz de manter os romanos afastados. Gunderico morreu em 428 dC e o trono caiu para seu meio-irmão Gaiserico (reinou de 428-478 dC, também conhecido como Genserico), que se tornaria o maior dos reis vândalos e um dos monarcas mais eficazes da Antiguidade.

O reinado de Genserico

Enquanto os vândalos consolidavam o seu poder em Espanha e combatiam os visigodos, o Império Romano sofria dos seus problemas habituais de intriga política. O Imperador do Ocidente foi Valentiniano III (reinou 425-455 d.C.) e ele ainda era uma criança e quem realmente tinha o poder era sua mãe, Galla Placídia (392-450 d.C.), e o general Flávio Aécio (391 d.C.). -454 DC). Por volta de 428 DC, Aécio traçou um plano no qual um de seus rivais, Bonifácio (que governou o Norte da África, morreu em 432 DC), foi acusado de traição contra Valentiniano III e Galla Placidia. Em 455 DC, Valentiniano assassinou Aécio e pouco depois ele próprio também foi assassinado por Petrônio Máximo. Justiniano derrotou os vândalos e devolveu o Norte da África ao Império Romano, mas, como observa Fuller, "cinco milhões de africanos morreram por causa das guerras e do governo do imperador Justiniano" (316). Os vândalos sobreviventes continuaram a viver sob o domínio romano no Norte de África ou emigraram para a Europa , mas nunca mais formariam um grupo étnico coeso.
