IGREJA DE SÃO PEDRO – PORTO ALEGRE, RIO GRANDE DO SUL

A história dessa igreja remonta ao final do século XIX, mais precisamente em 1887, quando foi erigida uma pequena capela em Porto Alegre, em um terreno doado por Eduardo de Azevedo de Sousa Filho. Foi dedicada ao apóstolo São Pedro, e vinculada à Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, permanecendo nessa condição por trinta anos.

Em 1917, a capela passou a ser a base de um curato (região com a presença de um cura, ou padre), criado por determinação do bispo Dom João Becker. Com a realização diária de missas e ofícios religiosos, não tardou a surgir a necessidade de se erigir um templo maior, e a população do local prontamente se mobilizou nesse sentido.

Nessa época, o Rio Grande do Sul já contava com uma grande quantidade de imigrantes alemães – bem como de seus descendentes nascidos aqui – e tal fato influenciaria de forma bastante visível o estilo do novo templo.

A construção dessa igreja maior foi promovida pelo padre Emilio Lottermann, que, na Páscoa de 1919, inaugurou uma parte da nave central. Em junho do mesmo ano o curato foi elevado à condição de paróquia, e na mesma época foi apresentado aos moradores o projeto final da igreja: uma grande matriz em estilo neogótico, desenhada pelo arquiteto tcheco Josef Hruby.

As obras foram realizadas sob a direção de Franz Rhoden, e nela participaram vários artistas de origem germânica: como exemplo, os vitrais foram todos confeccionados por Albert Gottfrid Veit e seus familiares Albert Georg Veit, Hans Veit, Leopod Höpf, Joseph Veigel e Albert Höpfe (que haviam chegado ao Brasil em 1913). As torres, por sua vez, foram finalizadas sob supervisão do italiano Vitorino Zani. A igreja ficaria inteiramente concluída somente em 1944, quando os irmãos Curci realizaram as pinturas internas.

Essa bela igreja, concebida por um arquiteto tcheco e finalizada por alemães e italianos, é um permanente exemplo da riqueza espiritual e cultural ocasionada pela mistura de nacionalidades católicas dentro do Brasil.

Abaixo, a capela mor, com vitrais representando cenas da vida de São Pedro. O crucifixo suspenso sobre a ábside é um costume normalmente encontrado em algumas igrejas alemãs.
